Black lives matter
What is BLM? – Black Lives Matter is a decentralized political and social movement that seeks to highlight racism, discrimination, and racial inequality experienced by black people, and promote anti-racism. In the text there are mentioned these words: slogan, movement, ideology or organization. BLM is associated with organized bodies, policy agendas, protests, petitions, ideologies and more. The more support it gains, the more difficult it becomes to criticize. And as the author notes, presenting many examples of arson and arrests, she cannot believe whether this organization has brought more benefit than harm. According to her words, according to calculations, the insurance companies should compensate approximately 2 billion US dollars. She believes that in this day and age (ecologically) any opposition to BLM at all can be seen as a humiliating move or blasphemy.
What Is the George Floyd case? — George Floyd was an African-American black man who was killed in Minneapolis in May 2020. In Minneapolis, he was arrested and laid on the ground, after which one of the policemen who arrested him put his foot on his neck. Mr. George was shouting, saying that he could not breathe, and passers-by were calling the police to let him go. But in vain, after some time he died, after so much shouting and calling. And to be honest, I think that the case of George Floyd should have been a motivation for the protesters, but it seems to have turned into a political action and in many cases people do not even imagine the seriousness of the case and the responsibility of law enforcement agencies.
Identify what the author criticizes BLM for ?
- Police needs reform — The protesters consider the actions and activities of the police as a racist step. But demographically there are more blacks incarcerated than whites, but that’s not based on racist considerations at all, it’s based on the imprisoned, because 25% of them are black. Therefore, the demonstrators consider the arrests as a racist move, but do not take into account that white people are also arrested.
- For the BLM movement the insurance companies must pay approximately 2 billion US dollars. Because during demonstrations and riots in the largest cities of the USA, protesters broke, smashed and destroyed, that is, they caused material damage, so someone should pay for it. The more support it gains, the more difficult it becomes to criticize. And as the author notes, presenting many examples of arson and arrests, she cannot believe whether this organization has brought more benefit than harm.
- What appears to be the official Black Lives Matter website makes no mention of these policy proposals, instead offering an unenlightening video to clarify that defunding the police means giving the police less money.
Summary
- lack of clarity, movement, organization etc.
- exclusive focus on police reforms, police violence, instead of poverty and social topics
- blind to the crimes committed by blacks
- demonstrations initiated by BLM have caused a lot of damages
- movement should have wider political issues
- against defunding the police
- fear of police officers must be taken into account (right to carry arms, guns)
- side effect social media: difficult to take a critical view
My Personal Statement
Do Black Lives Matter? – Of course, I think there are no conflicting opinions there.
I believe and will assert my opinion that BLM is an important factor for the USA, because it helps overcome racism. Why, because they witnessed slavery for many years, which was widespread among blacks. As far as BLM is concerned, it is an important “apolitical” organization for the United States, but considering the negative aspects and criticisms, I am of the opinion that the main goals and directions of BLM should be reviewed. I don’t want to go off topic in any way, but I must say that there is no need to distinguish between “lives”, that is, I am of the opinion that there should not be white and black lives, there is only one — human life. But I doubt that the world will be able to consider this as a fundamental principle in the coming decades. As important as BLM is, so important are our lives, the lives of Armenians, the lives of others, and as much as they fight for the lives of blacks, we can and should also fight for the lives of whites, because they are human too. If we do not make a difference, then we have to take into account all provisions. And if we don’t make a difference, there are two ways, to create as many organizations as possible to protect each other’s lives, or to simply abandon all such organizations.
But without deviating from the topic, I must say that the US has abandoned slavery. And if we look at it from the point of view of the USA, it is forbidden by law to even use offensive words towards them. Therefore, in this case, the organization seems to lose its essence somewhere. However, it is necessary, it is still necessary, but if it changes direction, organizes pogroms, then it is not necessary.
Letter to Lucy Kross Wallace
I agree with Ms. Lucy’s examples and criticisms. Everything has its own good and bad sides, and the organization or slogan isn’t an exception. And taking into account all this, as well as what I wrote above, I must say that reforms are required. Why? Because we should not allow one to hurt another in order to uphold his own. No, we should have such an organized society that everyone will respect each other and not put themselves above others.
