City developers are building Songdo on land which was underwater until some years ago. There are plenty of green spaces in the city, and there is a large park in the centre with skyscrapers all around it. Property developers have built 80,000 new homes as well as schools and a university. The city aims to watch pollution levels carefully by using technology to measure energy use and car use. Designers are also planning a system which will soon use the population’s waste and rubbish to generate renewable energy. Families like living here because there is so much space. Planners also hope that they will soon see more businesses in Songdo when transport links with Seoul are even faster.

Songdo is a city of the future, and it could become a model for many other cities around the world.

In 1998 British artist Richart Sowa created his first artificial island. He filled nets with empty plastic bottles, covered them with wood and sand (b), and then planted mangrove plants. the island had a two-storey house and three beaches (c), where Sowa could relax and sunbathe. Unfortunately, the island was destroyed by a hurricane in 2005, but Sowa has now built an even better one, with two sea-water pools (a) and even a solar-powered coast (a). His house also has a washing machine powered by the waves (a). Sowa believes that floating (c) islands could be built on rivers, lakes (b) and oceans all over the world, saving space, and meaning that people’s homes would be safe when the level of the water rose.
