Over the last 35 years, China has changed from a rural society to one of the world’s most technologically advanced societies, producing 90% of the world’s computers. However, China is also responsible for the invention of paper. In Shiqiao village, paper is still made using traditional techniques. For example, tree branches are cut down by hand, bark removed and washed in a local river. Next, there are a number of long, painstaking processes. The final product is a beautiful paper, thicker than mass-produced paper, with a texture similar to fabric. It is used to make products such as notebooks and lanterns. It is expensive but made to last for a long time.
